Sheila E. at West LA Music...

"Legendary Percussionist" and hot piece of ass Sheila E. will be in clinic at West L.A. Music on Wed. Sept. 3 at 7-9 p.m. I'll be there, doing my best to win free stuff.

I've seen her a few times do her drum clinics and I have really enjoyed her playing. I think she is really under rated in the drum world. I saw her do a clinic with Alex Acuna and they both played dbl drums and dbl percussion duos and there were moments of brilliance on both parts. I also saw Horacio and Giovanni do a duo clinic and it wasn't nearly as cool. Just too much blowing and not enough listening.

But which 1 comes 1st in order, d'ya think? The drummer, percussionist, or "HPOA?!" [img]wink.gif[/img]

Having just discovered that no free stuff will be given away, I will not be attending tonight's Sheila E. clinic. No Free Stuff = LAME.

Well, I ended up going, seeing as West LA Music is close to the love shack. I knew I was in trouble when she started crying in the beginning of the clinic while recounting her childhood. Good grief, I thought, trying to stay awake. She seems like a nice person, but it was really not an informative or educational two hours. She explained nothing and barely did any playing.

It was more of Sheila E. trying to entertain everybody with jokes and stories about her life. The best part was a duet with her father, him on timbale and her on congas, but it only lasted a few minutes. She closed by playing timbales to her tune "Glamorous Life" (or whatever its called). She took a good solo and ended the song with a cheesy popstar pose--stick pointed up to the sky, a la Tommy Lee. You had to be there.

Clinton Cameron was there (Clayton's brother), which was a highlight for me, since Clayton is so hip. I talked to him after the show. Also a certain Steve Holmes showed up.

Oddly, the clinic was absolutely packed and she was bombarded with autograph seekers afterward. Not to be mean, but a lot of her fans were kind of strange--an older crowd sporting Sheila E. paraphernalia like posters and old albums.

Again, she's a nice lady and she is certainly a good percussionist, but the clinic was a bore.
